What is left to rest, is left to rust. A fundamental rule of bike care is that not keeping up with standard maintenance can increase wear and likelihood of defect. Maintenance of the moveable parts such as bicycle chains, derailleurs, sprockets etc. should receive regular upkeep with cleaning and lubrication throughout the year. There are an assortment of products to keep your bike running reliably such as chain oils, cleaners and lubricants. Suspension forks can be cared for with penetrating oils. Rear suspension joints as well as bottom brackets can also benefit from special grease. In order to complete the whole process though one should not forget an appropriate PTFE or Teflon seal to keep dirt and moisture off of the bike, keeping your bicycle looking great.
